About Hearts & Hands

Martha SpruceMartha Spruce
RMT

Finding Reiki at a pivotal time of life is the kind of synchronicity that happened to Martha Spruce, founder of Hearts & Hands, and also what she intends to facilitate for others in private sessions and training workshops. The message she wants to convey is that Reiki can be transformational, providing a foundation of courage to follow one's dreams for health and happiness, and to actually live those dreams.

When Martha first learned Reiki in 1994, she was working as a family planning counselor in Belfast - stressed by ordinary life, trying to cope with memory problems from an old head injury, and completely out of touch with what might make her happy. Learning to receive and give Reiki felt like coming home: an oasis of peacefulness, with room to just BE. She learned to create and enjoy her life and is very grateful to her Reiki teachers Barbara Thomas and Terry Miller.

Many changes followed, including a mercifully short stint as a waitress while she was apprenticing for her master level in Reiki, a move to Bath, and a new idea to open a Reiki Clinic in Bath as a partnership with Diane Webster. We held our first few classes in a Brunswick church, but soon found ourselves on Front Street in our own place. A few years later, a move down the hall gave us a suite of four rooms and our own bathroom. We have used our larger space to expand our services and to invite several of our master level former students to join us as associates.

In addition to private sessions, training workshops, monthly introductory Reiki Clinics and Practitioner Shares, home visits, and operating room surgical support, Martha also has been providing Reiki since 2003 for patients at Greater Brunswick Physical Therapy, which she loves. She has additional training in hospice, hospital chaplaincy, craniosacral therapy, breathwork, Process Work, and is a facilitator for the nationally-based program "Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster"®. She enjoys being a mom to her son Spence, walking her dog, and making dreams come true.

Mary MaverickMary Maverick
RMT, LMT & Life Coach

Mary’s tenet: “I believe in the wisdom and power of the body to heal itself from any illness, injury or trauma. Sometimes the body simply needs a chance to do its own healing work and a gentle treatment like Reiki provides just that kind of unencumbered peaceful space.”

Following several years of study Mary received her Master/Teacher Reiki training here at Hearts & Hands in the spring of 2007. After receiving her Reiki I attunement from Martha and Diane in 2002 she wanted to know more of how the body worked and enrolled in Spa Tech Institute (formerly the Polarity Institute) where she studied anatomy, physiology, therapeutic massage and Polarity Therapy.

She is currently studying for her CST II training with the Upledger CranioSacral Institute as she finds it compliments her Reiki and other bodywork skills very well. Along with these she combines prayer, crystals, channeling, color therapy, toning, essential oils and intention, among others. Mary is also a Quantum Touch practitioner and holds periodic video workshops to introduce others to this work.

In the fall and winter Mary teaches an Adult Ed workshop on creativity using Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. She has discovered that creativity is a wonderful ancient healing tool. Currently Mary is a student of Mystery School applications, takes Mid-Eastern Belly Dance lessons for fun and fitness and drums in a drum circle just for the joy of it. Rounding out her life are 4 grown children providing the joy of several grandchildren.
